Portrait

Is abstract painting a more vivid form of reality?
Is it a painting or a discharge?
With automated and swiftly executed brush strokes on smooth supports, Nakabayashi creates blotches of what looks like a forest or a river.

For Nakabayashi, uncaringly cutting down a tree in a street in order to keep it from projecting out onto the street is akin to not listening to its voice; water flowing through a garden is for him who is protected from others and never leaves the darkness. Paintings, which at first glance appears to be landscapes, vibrantly express people’s reality.
What is depicted in these paintings changes constantly according to the viewer’s background and the world’s prevailing issues; they can become a device that enables the viewer to experience the painting’s physicality and to imagine the pain of others.

“Since my childhood, I have lived as a woman in Japan, and have constantly felt physical pain that is hard to heal.
Is this process meant to heal those wounds, or to reach out to those in need of help?
It can’t be just one or the other. The only way to understand someone else and to connect with society is to objectify one’s world.”
